Tenant Police Verification in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad: UP Police Online Guide (2026)
Renting in Noida, Greater Noida or Ghaziabad? Verification goes to UP Police, not Delhi Police. Here's how to apply on the UPCOP app or website, what to keep ready and what happens next.

In this article
If you are renting a flat in Noida, Greater Noida, Greater Noida West or Ghaziabad, your tenant police verification goes to Uttar Pradesh Police, not Delhi Police. Many people search for the Delhi Police form, fill it in, and only later find out it does not cover a UP address. This guide explains how verification works in these cities, how to apply online on the UPCOP app or the UP Police website, what to keep ready, and what actually happens after you submit.
Which police handle verification in Noida and Ghaziabad
Noida, Greater Noida and Greater Noida West (Noida Extension) are in Gautam Buddh Nagar district and come under the Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissionerate. Ghaziabad, including Indirapuram, Vaishali and Raj Nagar Extension, comes under the Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate.
Both run on Uttar Pradesh Police's statewide online system, so the steps are the same in all four places. What changes is the police station: your application goes to the station that covers the rented flat's address.
- Flat in Noida, Greater Noida or Ghaziabad: use the UPCOP app or the UP Police website.
- Flat in Delhi: use Delhi Police's tenant registration.
- Flat in Gurgaon or Faridabad: use Haryana Police's HarSamay portal.
Our Delhi NCR police verification guide covers the Delhi and Haryana routes.
Is tenant police verification compulsory in UP?
Police in Uttar Pradesh ask landlords to register every tenant, and it is a standard part of renting in Noida and Ghaziabad. Many housing societies also ask for the verification receipt before they issue gate passes or add a new resident to the society app.
Older guides say landlords who skip it can be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code. Since 1 July 2024, that offence is Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). It applies when someone disobeys a lawful order issued by a public servant, such as a police order requiring landlords to register their tenants. The punishment is up to six months' simple imprisonment, a fine of up to ₹2,500, or both. It goes up to one year, a fine of up to ₹5,000, or both, if the disobedience endangers human life, health or safety.
In practice, the bigger risk for a landlord is being held to account if an unverified tenant is later involved in a crime. For a tenant, verification is quick, and it avoids problems with the society or the police later.
Landlord or tenant: who applies?
The duty sits with the landlord, but the form needs details from both of you. Either person can fill in the online form, as long as the landlord's details, the property address and the tenant's details are all correct. Agree who will do it before you move in, and make sure the person who applies shares the acknowledgement with the other.
Documents to keep ready
Requirements vary a little by police station, so check what the form asks for. Usually you need:
- A recent passport-size photo of the tenant.
- A photo ID of the tenant: Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence or PAN.
- Proof of the tenant's permanent address. The address on the ID often works.
- The tenant's workplace or college details, and a contact number for family or an emergency contact.
- The landlord's name, phone number and ID, and sometimes proof of ownership such as an electricity bill or sale deed.
- The rent agreement. In Uttar Pradesh, the 2021 tenancy law requires every tenancy to be in writing. Our rent agreement guide explains how it works.
Scan everything clearly and keep the files small. Online portals often reject large uploads, and some guides suggest keeping each file under about 200 KB.
How to apply online on the UPCOP app
UPCOP is UP Police's official citizen app, published by Technical Services, UP Police. Its services include tenant verification, domestic help verification, employee verification and character certificates, in Hindi and English. The screens change from time to time, but the flow looks like this:
- Install UPCOP from the Google Play Store or the App Store. Check that the publisher is UP Police, not a look-alike app.
- Register or log in with your mobile number and the OTP you receive.
- Choose Tenant Verification.
- Enter the landlord's details and the rented property's address. Pick the right district (Gautam Buddh Nagar or Ghaziabad) and the police station for that address.
- Enter the tenant's details: name, parents' names, permanent address, phone number, occupation and workplace.
- Upload the photo and ID documents.
- Check everything, pay any fee shown, and submit. Details usually cannot be changed after you submit.
- Save the request number. Use Search Status/Download in the app to track it and download the result once it is done.
How to apply on the UP Police website
If you prefer a laptop, go to the official UP Police website (uppolice.gov.in), open Citizen Services and choose Tenant/PG Verification. You log in with a mobile number, fill in the same details, upload the documents and submit. Keep the acknowledgement and use the same section to check the status later.
How to apply offline at the police station
You can still do it the old way:
- Get the tenant verification form from the police station that covers the flat, or download it from the UP Police website.
- Fill in the landlord's and tenant's details and attach the photo and copies of the documents.
- Sign it. Both landlord and tenant usually sign.
- Submit it at the station and ask for a stamped receipt.
Online is usually faster, because you can track the request instead of going back to the station to ask.
What happens in police verification for rent
A lot of people worry about this part. For most tenants it is routine.
- Your details go to the local police station. The station for the flat's address receives the request.
- Records are checked. According to a senior UP Police official quoted in 2024, the app's tenant verification helps landlords check a tenant's details against national crime records kept by the NCRB.
- The police may contact you. An officer may call the landlord or tenant, ask a few questions, or visit the flat. They may ask you to come to the station, or ask for another document.
- The request is closed and the result can be downloaded. Keep a copy with your rent agreement.
How long it takes: UP Police's DGP said in January 2026 that tenant verification through UPCOP takes about 8 days. Other guides report 5 to 15 working days in cities like Noida. It can take longer if your permanent address is in another state and needs to be checked there.
Fee: Guides commonly quote a small fee of about ₹50. The exact amount, if any, is shown before you pay, so go by what the app or website shows.
Flatmates, PGs and changes during your tenancy
- Flatmates: every adult living in the flat should be verified, not just the person who signed first. In most cases each person needs a separate application.
- PGs and shared rooms: the PG owner should verify each resident. The UP Police website lists this under Tenant/PG Verification.
- When someone new moves in, verify them too. When you move out, tell your landlord so the records can be updated.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the Delhi Police website for a Noida or Ghaziabad flat. Delhi Police only covers addresses in Delhi.
- Choosing the wrong police station. Greater Noida West societies, for example, fall under a different station from those in central Noida. Check which station covers your society.
- An address that does not match the rent agreement. Use exactly the same flat number, tower and society name in both.
- Blurry or cropped ID scans. They are the most common reason for a request being sent back.
- Not keeping the acknowledgement. Without the request number you cannot track or download the result.
