Renting guide · Delhi NCR
What it is, who applies, which documents you need, and where to do it in Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
At a glance
01 · The basics
Tenant police verification is a record, kept with the local police, of who is living at a rented address. The landlord shares the tenant’s name, photo, ID and permanent address with the police station for that area.
Why it matters
Police in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh ask landlords to register every tenant, so expect it whenever you rent anywhere in Delhi NCR.
02 · How it works
The tenant shares details
Photo, photo ID, permanent address and the rent agreement go to the landlord.
The landlord applies
Online on the state police portal, or with the offline form at the local police station.
The police record it
The local station processes the application. Timing depends on the station and how complete it is.
Keep the receipt
Save the acknowledgement to track status. In Haryana, the certificate can be downloaded once issued.
03 · Where to apply
Delhi NCR spans three states, and each runs its own police portal.
Delhi
Delhi Police website, under Citizen Services → Tenant Registration. The offline form at the local police station also works.
Delhi Police ↗Gurgaon and Faridabad
Haryana Police’s HarSamay citizen portal. The Tenant Verification Certificate can be downloaded there once issued.
HarSamay portal ↗Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad
UP Police citizen services, under Tenant/PG Verification, or the UPCOP mobile app.

Open the portal and sign up
On the Delhi Police website, open Domestic Help/Tenant Registration under Police Services. Create an account with your name, mobile number and email, verify the OTP, then log in.
Fill in the form
Add the owner's details, the tenant's details (permanent address, phone, workplace), family members living in the flat, the rented address and the declaration.
Upload and submit
Upload the tenant's photo and ID and address proof. Guides suggest keeping each scan under about 200 KB. Check everything, then submit.
Save and track it
Download or print the acknowledgement with its registration number. To check it later, log in to the same account and open your submitted registrations.
Online registration on the Delhi Police portal is generally free. Some guides mention a fee of up to ₹250 for offline or assisted applications, so go by what the portal or police station shows.
05 · After you apply
The police station for the flat's address gets the owner's and tenant's details when you submit. The acknowledgement is your proof that the tenant is registered.
Police can check the tenant's details against crime records and the permanent address. Guides report field checks taking about one to three weeks where they happen.
A beat officer may call the landlord or tenant, visit the flat, or ask for another document. For most tenants, that is the end of it.
Renting in Noida, Greater Noida or Ghaziabad? Those addresses go to UP Police instead. See our step-by-step UP guide.
06 · For your rent agreement
A rent agreement does not need police verification before it is signed or registered. The two are separate: the agreement is between you and the landlord, and verification registers the tenant with the local police.
In practice, landlords and housing societies ask for both. Many societies want proof of verification before they issue gate passes, so do it at the same time as the agreement and keep the two papers together.
Is there a separate certificate?
No. In Delhi, the acknowledgement from the Delhi Police portal is your proof. In Gurgaon and Faridabad, Haryana Police issues a Tenant Verification Certificate on HarSamay. For the agreement itself, see our rent agreement guide.
07 · Documents
Exact requirements differ by police district, so check the form before you apply. Keep the acknowledgement or receipt you get after submitting.
A recent passport-size photo of the tenant
A photo ID of the tenant: passport, driving licence, voter ID or Aadhaar
Proof of the tenant’s permanent address
The rent agreement
The owner’s details, and sometimes proof of ownership

Yes. Delhi Police, Haryana Police (HarSamay) and UP Police (website and UPCOP app) all offer tenant verification online.
If you move, or other people move in with you, the landlord may need to update the record. Ask your landlord or the local police station.
Log in to the Delhi Police citizen services account you used to apply and open your submitted tenant registrations. Keep the registration number from the acknowledgement handy. The local police station can also tell you where it stands.
Not to sign or register the agreement. But landlords are asked to register tenants with the police, and many societies ask for proof, so do both together and keep the papers with each other.
The local police station receives the owner's and tenant's details and may check them against crime records. An officer may call, visit the flat or ask for another document. For most tenants it is routine.
Online registration on the Delhi Police portal is generally free. Some guides mention a fee of up to ₹250 for offline or assisted applications, so go by what the portal or police station shows.
